Zach Wilson Remains Firmly in the No. 2 Spot for Miami Dolphins, Despite Ewers‘ Progress
Miami Gardens, FL – The Miami Dolphins’ backup quarterback competition isn’t much of one, at least not yet. Despite flashes of potential from rookie quinn Ewers, veteran zach wilson continues to hold the clear edge as Tua Tagovailoa‘s primary understudy, according to observations from recent practices and preseason games.
while Head Coach Mike McDaniel isn’t expected to address the situation until thursday, a recent inquiry to Offensive Coordinator Frank Smith confirmed what many have already suspected: Wilson is currently positioned as the No. 2 quarterback.
“Zach is the backup quarterback,” McDaniel stated on July 30th, adding, “and its up to players to adjust that.” So far, no adjustment has been made.
preseason Stats Tell a Story
Through two preseason games, the numbers support the coaching staff’s assessment:
zach Wilson: 20 of 32 (62.5%), 247 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 96.7 passer rating (5 sacks)
Quinn Ewers: 16 of 35 (45.7%), 207 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT, 83.9 passer rating (2 sacks)
While both quarterbacks experienced some struggles during Wednesday’s practice – including fumbles from each – Wilson generally appeared to run the offense more efficiently and received more snaps, notably in red zone drills.
Ewers Showing Promise, but Time is running Out
Ewers, a seventh-round pick from Texas, has demonstrated advancement since his debut, connecting on a deep pass to A.J. Henning and a well-placed throw to Mike Boone during Wednesday’s session. However, the window for him to close the gap on Wilson is rapidly shrinking.
The Dolphins have a joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, followed by Saturday’s preseason finale. After that, all eyes turn to the regular season opener against the Indianapolis colts on September 7th.
Wilson’s Reliability and Investment
McDaniel has previously described Wilson as a “direct, calculated target,” and the team is paying him $6 million this season. This investment, coupled with Wilson’s consistent performance in practice, has solidified his position. While Wilson had a couple of errant throws against the Detroit Lions, he has generally been the more reliable option.
Dolphins’ Backup QB Situation: A Step Up?
The Dolphins are hoping this season’s backup quarterback situation represents an upgrade from previous years. With a veteran presence in Wilson and a developing rookie in Ewers, Miami appears to have more stability at the position heading into
