Dollar to Peso Exchange Rate: March 22, 2026 – Mexico Update

March 22, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

The U.S. Has increased the reward for information leading to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to $50 million, linking him to the Cartel de Sinaloa, according to reports from Spanish news outlet El País on Sunday.

The escalated reward, a significant increase from previous offers, reflects growing U.S. Concern over Maduro’s alleged involvement in drug trafficking. The U.S. Government alleges Maduro and other high-ranking Venezuelan officials were involved in a conspiracy with the Cartel de Sinaloa to flood the United States with cocaine.

The move comes as the peso mexicano remains relatively stable against the U.S. Dollar, trading at 17.90 pesos per dollar as of Sunday, March 22, 2026. This rate has persisted throughout the week, and analysts suggest it is unlikely to shift significantly in the near term.

The peso’s stability is tied to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has impacted global oil prices. A decline in the value of the Mexican peso is attributed to the U.S.-Middle East conflict, affecting petroleum prices and subsequently the peso’s value. This price, nearing 18 pesos per dollar, hasn’t been seen since September 2025, following a period of peso strengthening in October 2025.

According to data from Banxico (the Bank of Mexico) the official FIX exchange rate is $17.8998 MXN per U.S. Dollar. Commercial banks are offering varying rates, with Afirme at 16.60 MXN for purchases and 18.10 MXN for sales, while Bank of America offers 16.4474 MXN for purchases and 18.3824 MXN for sales. Banorte is offering 16.45 MXN for purchases and 18.00 MXN for sales. BBVA Bancomer is at 16.80 MXN for purchases and 17.93 MXN for sales.

The Banxico FIX rate is a crucial benchmark for the Mexican financial market, calculated as a weighted average of wholesale market transactions. It is published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación (DOF) and used for settling dollar-denominated obligations and contracts in Mexico.

The difference between the Banxico FIX rate and market prices stems from factors like bank commissions, profit margins, and operational costs. The FIX rate provides order and transparency, but does not dictate the final price of individual transactions.

Meanwhile, Mexico has seen a record high of $21.4 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) so far in 2025, according to President Claudia Sheinbaum.

In a separate legal development, a U.S. Court has ordered Genaro García Luna, former Mexican Secretary of Public Security, and his wife to pay $2.5 billion to Mexico.

The Iraqi national football team will travel to Mexico to compete in the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff, according to reports from Primicias.
