Doja Cat: Father Speaks Out & Yizo Yizo Star Responds

March 23, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Pretoria, South Africa – Dumisani Dlamini, the South African actor known for his roles in Sarafina! and Yizo Yizo, has publicly addressed recent social media posts made by his daughter, American rapper Doja Cat, regarding their relationship. The statements followed Doja Cat’s first-ever concert in South Africa on Friday, March 20, 2026, at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria.

In a series of TikTok videos posted prior to the concert, Doja Cat, whose full name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, claimed she had attempted to contact her father about meeting during her visit. She alleged that Dlamini declined the invitation, stating he hadn’t received enough communication from her. She further claimed to have responded by sending him a link to pornography.

Dlamini, speaking to local media, confirmed he was present at the concert but offered a more nuanced account of the situation. He acknowledged receiving a message from his daughter but expressed disappointment with the manner in which the interaction was subsequently shared online. “It was a very public thing to do and it wasn’t necessary,” he stated, declining to elaborate on the specific content of the message.

Social media footage circulating online shows Dlamini attending the concert, wearing a black cap and a necklace featuring a crocodile tooth – a nod to his iconic role as Crocodile in Sarafina!. It remains unclear whether the two met privately backstage.

Doja Cat’s comments sparked a wave of reaction on social media, with many users expressing sympathy for Dlamini and criticizing his daughter’s public airing of private matters. The incident has resurfaced long-standing discussions about the complexities of family relationships and the impact of fame on personal lives.

Dlamini’s career began as a dancer, leading to his role in the original South African production of Sarafina! in 1987, and subsequently on Broadway. He continued to function in South African television, appearing in shows such as Isibaya, Shaka Ilembe, and Yizo Yizo. He also has credits as a producer and pianist on Linda Kekana’s 2002 album, I am an African.

As of Monday, March 23, 2026, neither Dlamini nor Doja Cat have issued further public statements regarding the matter. Doja Cat is scheduled to continue her international tour following the South African leg.
