Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” dominated the 98th Academy Award nominations, announced Thursday morning from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles, securing a record-breaking 16 nominations. The film surpassed the previous record of 14 nominations held jointly by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
The nominations, unveiled by actresses Danielle Brooks and actor Lewis Pullman, also included the Academy’s newly added category: casting. A total of 317 feature films were eligible for consideration this year, with 201 vying for a Best Picture nomination, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences reported in a press release.
“One Battle After Another,” directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, followed with 13 nominations, including recognition for DiCaprio, Taylor, Del Toro and Penn. Coogler’s nominations include Best Picture, Directing, and Original Screenplay, alongside acting nods for Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo.
The 98th Oscars ceremony will be hosted by Conan O’Brien for the second consecutive year and will air live on ABC and Hulu from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 15, beginning at 7 p.m. ET, as confirmed by ABC News and The Hollywood Reporter. The broadcast will also be streamed live on Hulu, starting at the same time.
The Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, February 8, falls within a critical period for awards season, occurring just ten days after the Oscar nominations were announced and nineteen days before the Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards on February 28, according to Variety. Comedian and actor Kumail Nanjiani will host the DGA ceremony. The DGA voting period closed Friday, February 6.
The Winter Olympics in Milan, commencing February 7, adds another layer of complexity to the awards calendar, potentially diverting global attention from the ongoing awards season, Variety reported.
