Dog Breeder Indicted for Tax Evasion of $900K+ in Japan
A dog breeder in Okinawa Prefecture has been indicted on suspicion of tax evasion, accused of concealing approximately 134 million yen in income over a three-year period. The Okinawa National Tax Agency filed a criminal complaint against Asahide Nakahara, 62, of Nowa City, with the Naha District Public Prosecutors Office, according to reports confirmed on Tuesday.
The tax agency alleges that Nakahara underreported his income between 2022 and 2024, evading approximately 44 million yen in taxes. The concealed income, according to investigators, was deposited into accounts held in his name and that of family members, and was also used to pay life insurance premiums. The Naha District Public Prosecutors Office has begun an investigation into the matter.
Nakahara operates a breeding business specializing in Akita dogs in Nowa City, according to online breeder directories. While several Akita dog breeders operate within Okinawa Prefecture, resources indicate that Nowa City may have a limited number of breeders specializing in the breed.
The formal criminal complaint was filed with the Naha District Public Prosecutors Office on November 21, 2025, according to the Ryukyu Shimpo. The case is currently under investigation.
