Dodgers on the Brink of world Series title, Blue jays Fight to Stay Alive in Game 6
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers stand one win away from claiming the World Series championship, leading the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 in the series. Game 6 is set for Saturday, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto (3-1, 1.57 ERA in the playoffs) taking the mound for the Dodgers against Kevin Gausman (2-2, 2.55 ERA) of the Blue Jays.
Toronto battled back to win Game 5, fueled by a strong offensive showing and solid pitching. The blue Jays capitalized on Dodgers miscues, scoring early and maintaining momentum throughout the contest. The team hopes to replicate that success and force a decisive Game 7. However, the Dodgers’ recent dominance, particularly Yamamoto’s stellar postseason performance, presents a significant challenge.
Yamamoto has become the first pitcher to record back-to-back complete games in the postseason since Curt Schilling in 2001, including a 105-pitch masterpiece in Game 2 that resulted in a 5-1 Dodgers victory. He has allowed three runs or fewer in all four of his playoff starts. Signed to a 12-year, $325 million contract last December, yamamoto previously earned three consecutive Sawamura Awards (Japan’s Cy young equivalent) and three Pacific League MVP awards.
“You know you got the money that you got for a reason,” Dodgers catcher Austin Hernández said after Yamamoto’s second complete game. “It’s not because you project. They didn’t give you the money as of what they think they can do to your stuff. They gave you the money because of who you are.”
If the series extends to a Game 7, both teams have ace starters available in relief. The Dodgers may utilize Shohei Ohtani as an opener, leveraging MLB’s two-way player rule which allows starting pitchers removed from the mound to continue as the designated hitter. however, removing Ohtani as a reliever would forfeit the DH spot, a risk the dodgers are unlikely to take in a crucial game given their offensive struggles. Toronto will also have Shane Bieber available from the bullpen, a key acquisition at the trade deadline.
The Blue Jays may adjust their lineup if Springer remains unavailable,potentially returning Nathan Lukes to leadoff or utilizing utility player Joey loperfido off the bench.
The outcome of Game 6 will determine weather the Dodgers secure their championship title or if the Blue Jays can force a winner-take-all Game 7.
