Dodgers Trade Dustin May to Red Sox

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

The Los Angeles dodgers have acquired outfield prospect James Tibbs III from the Boston red Sox, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. Tibbs was previously traded to the Red Sox by the San Francisco giants as part of the deal that sent Rafael Devers to Boston.

This acquisition potentially opens a spot in the Dodgers’ rotation, a role that was unlikely to be available for pitcher Dustin May.While May could have been a bullpen option for Los Angeles, the team opted to leverage the current market for starting pitchers.

May, 27, has posted a 4.85 ERA this season with a 4.70 FIP and a 1.35 WHIP. He has recorded a 21.5% strikeout rate and a 9.55 walk rate. This year, May has already set career highs in innings pitched (104) and starts (18).

Dustin May accustomed to trade speculation

Having been a highly-touted pitching prospect, Dustin May has frequently been mentioned in trade deadline rumors throughout his career. His name has surfaced in various meaningful trade discussions in the past.

In 2018, May was reportedly a target for the Baltimore Orioles in a potential Manny Machado trade. Early in 2019, he was linked to trade rumors involving J.T. Realmuto. Later that year, the Pittsburgh pirates expressed interest in May for a deal involving Felipe Vazquez, and in the 2019-2020 offseason, the Dodgers were rumored to be willing to include him in a trade for Francisco Lindor.

During the 2020 offseason, reports indicated that the Dodgers intended to keep May and Gavin Lux while pursuing players like Mike Clevinger, Mookie Betts, and Lindor.
