Dodgers CF Andy Pages Suffers Hand Fracture, Expected to Return This Season

August 22, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

According to MLB.com, manager Dave Roberts expects the All-Star outfielder to return in four to five weeks, potentially just in time for the postseason push.

The Physical and Tactical Impact of the Injury

The blow occurred in the bottom of the third inning at Dodger Stadium during an eventual 5-4 walk-off victory, leaving Pages in visible pain as athletic trainers escorted him to first base. While he initially attempted to play through the discomfort—logging one more inning in the field before being replaced by Kiké Hernández in the fifth—subsequent X-rays confirmed the fracture on the back of his left hand, as reported by AP News. The physical loss disrupts a breakout campaign. Pages enters the final stretch batting .272 with 25 home runs, 80 RBIs, and a .796 OPS. Beyond his offensive output, his defensive metrics underscore his value; Statcast metrics place him in the 96th percentile with nine outs above average in center field.

Roster Management and Defensive Replacements

Roberts noted that locking down the defensive alignment in center remains the top priority. The club holds internal options to bridge the gap, including Kiké Hernández and utility infielder Tommy Edman, who hit the game-winning single in the 10th inning against Pittsburgh. Shifting Edman to center field could open up opportunities at second base, while Alek Thomas—acquired earlier this year and holding an .855 OPS with Triple-A Oklahoma City—serves as the only other primary center fielder currently on the 40-man roster.

Timeline, Surgery Decisions, and Postseason Outlook

The timeline for recovery remains estimated at four to five weeks, though the club awaits further medical consensus regarding whether surgical intervention is necessary. Roberts indicated that even if Pages undergoes a minor procedure to stabilize the fracture, the recovery window would not change significantly. “I would expect him back, knowing him, on the earlier side,” Roberts told MLB.com. “There’s still time in the season for him to be back.” With Pages ranking second on the team with a 5.6 bWAR—trailing only Shohei Ohtani’s 6.8 bWAR—the Dodgers must hold down the fort through September before evaluating their postseason roster construction.
