Doctor Slams Islam Makhachev Over Dislocated Shoulder Attempt at PFL
Medical Backlash Over Corner Technique at PFL Tampa
Just a week removed from his historic title defense against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330, Islam Makhachev was in the corner of his teammate Magomed Magomedov at PFL Tampa. Magomedov was welcoming former UFC bantamweight Daniel Marcos to the Smartcage.
The bout progressed evenly through a striking display where Marcos managed to evade Magomedov’s wrestling attempts. However, late in the second round, a clinch resulted in a dislocation of Magomedov’s left shoulder. During the interval between rounds, Makhachev attempted to pop the joint back into place before ultimately throwing in the towel just 11 seconds into the third round.
Writing on X, sports doctor Brian Sutterer stated, “This should be the go to reference for everything you do to NOT be successful in putting a shoulder back.” Other commentators noted that incorrect reduction techniques risk causing associated fractures.
Strategic Intervention and Fighter Safety Protocols
Despite criticism of the attempted manipulation, observers acknowledged the decision to stop the contest. With Magomedov’s shoulder continuing to cause issues, the decision prevented further damage.

Fighter Trajectory and Post-Event Fallout
The event marked a difficult outing for Team Nurmagomedov in Tampa, where the camp suffered two losses and earned just one win. For Daniel Marcos, the victory successfully re-establishes momentum after being cut from the UFC earlier in the year despite a 5-1-1 promotional record.
