GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway will start Saturday’s game against Long Island University, marking a meaningful step in his recovery from a calf strain that hampered his participation throughout much of fall camp. The announcement, made by gators head coach Billy Napier on Monday, confirms Lagway’s readiness after a period of limited practice availability.
The sophomore signal-caller has been a full participant in recent practices, earning the starting nod after taking team reps for the first time since training camp began in July. Lagway’s injury woes began with a calf strain sustained during offseason workouts, following his recovery from sports hernia surgery which kept him sidelined during spring practice. The cumulative effect of these injuries presented both a physical and mental challenge for the young quarterback.
napier emphasized the growth Lagway has demonstrated while navigating these setbacks. A lot of times things happen to you that you can’t control, so there’s opportunities to get better as an inevitable result of what he’s going through,
Napier stated during his weekly press conference. He’s learned a lot about himself. This won’t be the first time he’s gone through something like this. You play the game, you’re going to get injured, so how you manage that not only physically but mentally … for him that’s been a bit of a challenge, but I think it’s been healthy for him.
Lagway’s 2024 season showcased his potential,as he secured a 6-1 record as the Gators’ starter. He completed 1,915 passing yards with 12 touchdowns and added 101 rushing yards, quickly establishing himself as a key player for the program. His performance promptly impacted the gators’ fortunes, providing a spark that had been missing.
The Gators’ coaching staff will be closely monitoring Lagway’s progress throughout the week to ensure he remains healthy and prepared for the season opener. The team’s medical staff has implemented a tailored conditioning program designed to mitigate the risk of re-injury. Lagway’s ability to stay on the field will be crucial to Florida’s success in the competitive Southeastern Conference.
Looking Ahead: Lagway’s journey highlights the increasing demands placed on college athletes, both physically and mentally. The pressure to perform, coupled with the risk of injury, requires resilience and a strong support system.his experiance serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by student-athletes navigating the complexities of modern college football.
