Disney Debuts Taika Waititi‘s “Best Christmas Ever,” Packed with Hidden Disney References
Disney has released a new original Christmas short film, “Best Christmas Ever,” directed by Taika Waititi, offering a heartwarming story alongside a treasure hunt of Easter eggs for Disney fans. The short, which debuted in November 2025, centers on a young girl grappling with the realization that Christmas might not unfold as perfectly as she’d hoped.
Waititi, known for his work on projects like “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Jojo Rabbit,” intentionally layered the film with subtle nods to other Disney properties. “It’s always nice and fun to be able to put in Easter eggs from other things to,” Waititi explained. “At one point we had way too many! That kid’s bedroom was like she owned a Disney store! We had to scale that back a couple of times.”
Specific references include a Stitch mouth toy and an ice-cream cart with balloons from “Up” appearing in a park scene. Waititi noted the Easter eggs are “really around the house” and “very subtle.” He expressed enthusiasm for continuing the project, stating, “I would love for the Taika Waititi Disney Christmas Short universe to just keep going, so we could try and do new, different things every year.”
The short film embodies classic Disney themes of friendship and selflessness, presented in a condensed format that appeals to Waititi’s filmmaking roots.”I love creating these emotional stories with fantastical elements about the classic Disney themes…but in short form,” he said.”I get the best of both worlds, to do a bit of everything. I started out in short films…and it still,to me,feels like one of the great forms of filmmaking.” The advertisement concludes with Disney’s signature message: “Make someone’s holiday magic.”
