Disney Announces Zootopia 3, Frozen 3 and New Film Slate at D23
Disney’s D23 presentation confirmed an expansion of its core animated franchises, headlined by the development of Zootopia 3 following the $1.8 billion global gross of its predecessor. The studio also unveiled release dates and creative details for Frozen 3, the live-action Lilo & Stitch, and the original feature Clay.
The Economics of Franchise Longevity
With the second installment securing its place as the highest-grossing animated film in the company’s history, the studio is moving to maintain that momentum. Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan confirmed their return to the franchise, signaling a commitment to continuity in vocal talent.
Frozen 3 and the Evolution of Narrative Stakes
Disney revealed that Frozen 3, scheduled for a Thanksgiving 2027 release, will feature a significant narrative shift: the marriage of Anna and Kristoff. Furthermore, the studio introduced a new character named Samantha, who will serve as a love interest for Olaf. The presentation included initial concept art, confirming that the studio intends to maintain the musical and character-driven focus that propelled the previous films to massive global success.
Live-Action Transitions and Original IP
The studio provided a glimpse into its live-action pipeline, showing footage of the upcoming Tangled adaptation, which is currently filming in Spain. Starring Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim, the project features Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel and Diego Luna in a new role. Additionally, Disney showcased the first look at the live-action Lilo & Stitch sequel, set for release on May 26, 2028. Maia Kealoha appeared to debut the character design for Angel, Stitch’s love interest, which incorporates the two-antennae aesthetic established in the character’s original series.
Original animation also remains a focus, with Clay slated for 2028. This is complemented by the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit mini-series, directed by Jon Favreau, which premieres in February 2027 and utilizes a hybrid of live-action and hand-drawn 2D animation.

The immediate theatrical future includes Hexed, opening November 25. The film features Jodie Foster as a witch queen and Walton Goggins as a three-eyed cat named Beef Roger Crummchuk. The plot centers on a teenage protagonist and her mother discovering hidden magic, a premise designed to resonate with core demographics.
