Diphtheria Cases Prompt ECDC Warning to Healthcare Professionals

Evergreen Context

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has issued a recommendation for healthcare professionals to consider diphtheria in their differential diagnoses for patients presenting with compatible clinical symptoms.

The ECDC has identified a moderate risk of diphtheria for vulnerable populations, including newly arrived migrants, homeless individuals, those residing in temporary accommodations, drug users, and volunteers, particularly if they have not been vaccinated against the disease.

The agency emphasizes the importance of promoting and monitoring equitable access to vaccinations, especially for socially marginalized groups such as migrants and individuals with chronic health conditions who may be more susceptible to infections.
