Barcelona 1-0 Rayo Vallecano: Yamal & Cancelo Shine – Match Review 2026

March 23, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Barcelona secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou on Sunday, a result propelled by an unlikely goal from defender Ronald Araujo. The win maintains Barcelona’s lead in La Liga, extending it to seven points ahead of Real Madrid’s upcoming derby match against Atletico Madrid, according to reports from March 22, 2026.

The match saw a dominant performance from Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia, who made a series of crucial saves. Early in the game, Garcia thwarted Carlos Martin’s close-range effort, and later denied Alvaro Garcia and Unai Lopez, preventing Rayo Vallecano from taking the lead. Garcia’s performance was particularly notable given recent concerns about an injury sustained against Newcastle, as reported by Goal.com.

Araujo broke the deadlock midway through the first half, heading in a corner from Joao Cancelo. Raphinha had earlier missed a clear opportunity, firing wide when through on goal. Barcelona nearly doubled their advantage when Raphinha’s deflected shot struck the crossbar.

Despite Barcelona’s lead, the match was not without controversy. Lamine Yamal appealed for a penalty in the first half after a challenge by Pathe Ciss, but the referee, Adrián Cordero Vega, waved play on, a decision upheld by VAR official Raúl Martínez González. Former Spanish referee Iturralde González stated that, in his opinion, the incident was a foul, noting Ciss “swung his leg” and created contact.

Following the match, Yamal expressed frustration with his team’s performance, stating they lacked “intensity.” He emphasized the need to regain the sharpness displayed last season and highlighted a breakdown in communication that led to Rayo Vallecano’s near-equalizer from a set piece, where a Rayo player was left unmarked. Yamal, who won a penalty that he then converted, expressed confidence in his ability to accept spot-kicks if trusted by the team.

Barcelona’s win comes after a previous 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano where Yamal also scored, but the team failed to secure the victory. The team will now look to address the issues raised by Yamal and prepare for their next match following the international break.
