Directors Reject HBO Harry Potter Series Over JK Rowling Views
Directors Reject HBO’s Harry Potter Series Over J.K. Rowling Stance
HBO’s upcoming television adaptation of the “Harry Potter” series faces fresh behind-the-camera casting hurdles as directors Ally Pankiw and Kate Herron publicly confirm they rejected opportunities to work on the project due to author J.K. Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues. The development extends ongoing creative friction surrounding the adaptation.
Instagram Post Triggers Public Refusal
The controversy escalated when Black Mirror director Ally Pankiw shared a screenshot on Instagram detailing an exchange with her representative. The agent asked whether she would consider directing for the HBO adaptation and predicted a negative response. Pankiw replied with a blunt refusal, stating in her post, “It simply is this easy to say ‘no’ to funding transphobia!”
Pankiw later clarified in an interview with Them that she had not received a formal job offer. Instead, her team was checking whether she would be willing to interview or meet about directing an episode during the show’s second season. She chose not to pursue the opportunity further.
Kate Herron, whose credits include directing the first season of Marvel’s Loki and Doctor Who, joined the public discussion in the comments section of Pankiw’s post. Herron revealed that she had been approached twice about joining the production and declined both times, writing that her answer was “never going to change from a ‘no’.”
Industry Fault Lines and Corporate Strategy
HBO Defends Author’s Involvement
HBO has previously defended its ongoing relationship with the author. In a 2024 statement provided to the entertainment trade publication Variety, an HBO spokesperson emphasized the author’s role as an executive producer. “J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views,” the network stated. “We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”

Additionally, HBO CEO Casey Bloys noted during a 2024 press briefing that Rowling had been closely involved in selecting the show’s writer and director. Bloys maintained that the author’s public commentary had not negatively impacted the network’s ability to hire production staff, writers, and performers.
Cast Divergence and Rowling’s Response
Not all cast members share identical viewpoints on the matter. British actress Bel Powley, cast as Harry Potter’s aunt Petunia Dursley in the series, addressed the friction directly. Powley stated publicly that she strongly disagrees with Rowling’s stance on gender, asserting that the transgender community deserves safety, dignity, respect, and total acceptance.

Rowling has consistently denied accusations of transphobia. She has characterized her advocacy as a defense of sex-based legal protections, female-only facilities, and women’s sports. In a 2025 social media post, Rowling challenged critics in the entertainment industry to specify which of her beliefs regarding public changing rooms, rape crisis centers, and female-only sports categories were offensive.
