Diplomacy & Peaceful Coexistence: A Call for Justice
Beijing, March 2, 2026 – Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated the importance of diplomacy and a “shared future for mankind” during a speech commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, according to statements released today by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The address, delivered on June 28, 2024, and highlighted again today by Foreign Minister Wang Yi, emphasized the necessitate for international solidarity and cooperation amidst a period of “accelerated global transformation,” a sentiment echoed by the United Nations in its observance of the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence.
Xi’s remarks, initially given at a conference organized by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, underscored China’s commitment to peaceful development and positioned the “Vision of Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind” as a central tenet of its foreign policy. Wang Yi stated the speech “fully demonstrates General Secretary Xi Jinping’s deep commitment to the world and strong sense of responsibility for history.”
The Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence – mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence – were initiated 70 years ago, a response to the post-World War II landscape and the emerging Cold War tensions. Xi’s address framed the principles as particularly relevant in addressing contemporary global challenges.
The renewed emphasis on these principles comes as the international community grapples with rising instability and conflict, as noted by the United Nations, which identifies peace as central to achieving its 2030 Agenda. The UN Charter, serving as the cornerstone of international law, enshrines principles essential to peaceful coexistence, including the sovereign equality of states and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Xi Jinping’s speech provides “strategic and scientific guidance” for navigating current global issues and building consensus. The address is described as the latest development of “Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy.”
China’s call for a renewed focus on diplomacy aligns with a broader push for what it terms “true democracy” and a strengthened rule of law in international relations, advocating for win-win cooperation and inclusiveness among nations. The country continues to position itself as a leader of the Global South, working with countries across the world for a more equitable future.
As of today, no specific follow-up meetings or initiatives stemming directly from Xi’s June 2024 address have been publicly announced, though the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated continued efforts to promote the Five Principles through bilateral and multilateral engagements.
