Former Moldovan intelligence Chief Accused of Leaking Romanian State Secrets to Belarus KGB
Bucharest – Romanian authorities are investigating allegations that a former head of the Republic of Moldova’s Facts and Security Service (SIS) disclosed Romanian state secrets to the Belarusian KGB. The investigation, led by the Directorate for Investigating organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), centers on suspicions that meetings were held to transmit instructions and facilitate payments for services rendered, according to sources familiar with the case. The probe, which began as a complex operation involving multiple intelligence agencies, highlights escalating security concerns in the region and raises questions about potential foreign interference. The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) initiated the investigation in collaboration with partner services in the czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary, later receiving support from the SIS of the Republic of Moldova itself. This case underscores the commitment of regional security services to defend against threats to national security, operating under the framework of Eurojust, the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation.
The SRI confirmed the ongoing investigation, stating it will “continue to carefully monitor these security risks and will act firmly to defend national security.” The SIS of the Republic of Moldova acknowledged the case, noting it arose from “specific actions carried out by SRI” and partner institutions, and reaffirmed its dedication to protecting national and regional security. Details regarding the specific secrets allegedly disclosed and the nature of the services provided remain confidential as the investigation progresses.
