italy Now Offers “Prescription Travel” for Healthcare, Streamlining Specialist Access
MILAN, ITALY - September 29, 2025 – Citizens in the Lombardy region of Italy can now effectively receive a “prescription” for healthcare travel, simplifying access to specialist medical appointments and exams. A new system requires a valid prescription – either a “red” paper recipe or an electronic one – alongside a Regional Service Charter or National health Card to book services.
The initiative aims to modernize and streamline the regional healthcare system, offering booking options via a dedicated website, mobile app, regional contact center, Cup counters, and participating Lombard pharmacies. For complex services requiring specific preparation, direct booking through the health facility remains necessary.
The regional booking network also provides a “Consulta availability” function, displaying the first available appointments in both public and private accredited facilities, complete with updated information and contact details.
While digitization is progressing, the customary “red paper recipe” remains valid for specific drugs or in cases of technical issues preventing electronic prescriptions. Importantly, prescriptions marked with urgency priority (red or yellow stamp) maintain their previous validity timelines, ensuring timely care. The system mandates cancellation of appointments at least three working days in advance to optimize waiting lists.
These changes are designed to improve efficiency, control, and quality of health services for citizens, according to regional health authorities (www.milanocittastato.it).
