Digital Driver’s Licenses to Become Reality in the Netherlands from 2027
The Hague, Netherlands – October 5, 2025 – Dutch drivers will soon be able to renew and carry their driver’s licenses digitally, with the new system slated to launch in 2027. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management announced the initiative today, marking a significant step towards modernizing identification and documentation processes within the country.
Currently, Dutch driver’s license renewals and replacements require physical visits to municipal offices and the issuance of a plastic card. The upcoming digital system aims to streamline this process, offering citizens a convenient and secure option via a dedicated app. This change impacts all 9.6 million Dutch license holders, reducing administrative burdens and contributing to a more lasting approach by eliminating plastic waste.
The digital driver’s license will function alongside the traditional plastic card for a transitional period. While details regarding security protocols and app functionality are still being finalized, the government assures that the digital version will meet the highest security standards and be readily accepted by authorities both within the Netherlands and internationally.
According to a press release from the Ministry, the digital license will be verifiable through a national identification system, ensuring authenticity and preventing fraud. The move aligns with broader European Union efforts to promote digital identity solutions and facilitate cross-border mobility. Further information regarding the rollout and specific app features will be released in the coming months.
