DIF Director La Paz – Fernandito Case Resignation

La Paz DIF Director Resigns Following Death of young Boy, Fernandito

La Paz, Baja California Sur – Mario Cristalino has resigned as Director General of the Family Integral Development System (DIF) in the municipality of La Paz, Mexico, approximately one week after the death of seven-year-old Fernandito. The resignation was announced by Cristalino himself via a public message.

Cristalino, who assumed the position on January 1, 2025, expressed gratitude to La Paz Mayor Martha Guerrero for the chance to serve the community for nearly eight months. He stated his departure marks the conclusion of his service period and reaffirmed his commitment to contributing to the well-being of the community in future roles. The resignation comes amid scrutiny regarding the DIF’s response to a plea for help from Fernandito’s mother prior to his death. According to Fabiola Villa, a human rights defender and legal advisor to the family, Fernandito’s mother sought assistance from various institutions, including the DIF and the Regional Prosecutor’s Office, but her requests were allegedly ignored. Villa noted the mother has a disability, which may have hindered her efforts.

The La Paz City Council has not yet released a statement detailing the reasons for Cristalino’s departure. However, the council has affirmed that the Municipal DIF did not receive a formal request for assistance regarding Fernandito’s case.

Fernandito’s remains were laid to rest this Saturday at the “Altavista” Municipal Pantheon in the Pasa Minas neighborhood, attended by family, friends, and community members.Authorities have determined that Fernandito was abducted on July 28th from the El Pino ejido community. the abduction was reportedly linked to a 1,000-peso loan granted to his mother, with the boy taken as collateral. His body was discovered seven days later, exhibiting signs of violence, in a nearby neighborhood.

Carlos ‘N’, Ana Lilia ‘N’, and Lilia ‘N’ – identified as father, mother, and daughter respectively – have been arrested and are currently in pre-trial detention at the Nezahualcóyotl Social Reintegration Center following a judge’s order on Friday. The investigation, led by the Mexican Prosecutor’s Office, is ongoing.
