Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred Trailer Sparks Excitement, with Switch 2 Rumors Growing Stronger
The official trailer for Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred has been released, marking the final promotional push ahead of the expansion’s launch.
Blizzard Entertainment unveiled the cinematic trailer on its YouTube channel, showcasing the return of Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, as the central antagonist of the upcoming expansion. The video opens with a desolate landscape shrouded in crimson mist, as a lone wanderer approaches a crumbling cathedral etched with infernal symbols. A voiceover, delivered in a guttural tone, warns of the spreading corruption: “Hatred does not burn — it seeps. It waits. It remembers every slight, every betrayal, every soul foolish enough to think it could escape.”
The trailer features intense combat sequences highlighting new gameplay mechanics tied to the expansion’s thematic focus on corruption and emotional manipulation. Players are shown wielding new abilities that distort enemy perception, turning allies against each other in chaotic melees. Visual effects emphasize the warping of reality — walls bleed shadow, skies fracture into shifting hues of violet and black, and the ground pulses with organic, vein-like corruption.
According to the game’s director, Joe Shely, the expansion aims to deepen the narrative exploration of Sanctuary’s moral ambiguity. “Lord of Hatred isn’t just about fighting a demon,” Shely stated in a recent developer update. “It’s about confronting how easily righteousness can curdle into zealotry, how grief can twist into vengeance, and how even the purest intentions can become weapons in the hands of those who suffer.”
The Lord of Hatred expansion introduces a new playable class: the Spiritborn, a martial artist who channels ancestral fury through spectral animal forms. Gameplay footage confirms the class utilizes stance-based combat, allowing players to shift between the agility of the jaguar, the resilience of the gorilla, and the precision of the eagle mid-fight. Each stance alters both offensive and defensive capabilities, encouraging dynamic adaptation during encounters.
A new region, the Shattered Peaks, serves as the primary setting for the expansion’s campaign. Located in the northern reaches of Sanctuary, the area features frozen tundras plagued by supernatural blizzards and ancient ruins corrupted by Mephisto’s influence. Environmental storytelling reveals the remnants of a once-devout monastic order that sought to imprison the Lord of Hatred — only to become his first and most devoted cult.
Blizzard confirmed that Lord of Hatred will launch on October 8, 2024, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The expansion will require the base game to play and will be available as a standalone purchase or as part of the Diablo IV: Ultimate Edition bundle. Pre-orders are now live, offering early access to the Spiritborn class and exclusive cosmetic sets inspired by the expansion’s aesthetic.
While rumors have circulated about potential future ports to Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 console, Blizzard has not officially confirmed any plans for a Diablo IV release on the platform. The company reiterated its current focus remains on delivering the Lord of Hatred expansion across existing supported systems, with no announcements regarding additional hardware compatibility at this time.
