CHAUMONT, Haute-Marne – A local association, Diab’aide52, is expanding its outreach programs to combat diabetes in the Haute-Marne department, offering crucial support and resources to patients and their families. The initiative comes as diabetes rates continue to rise nationally, placing increased strain on healthcare systems and individual well-being.
Founded on a commitment to community support, Diab’aide52 provides a multi-faceted approach to diabetes management. The association actively engages with the public through its Facebook page, offering benevolent exchanges, daily resources, and confidential listening support via Facebook Messenger. This digital presence complements their on-the-ground efforts.
Spearheading the organization are Salvatorangelo, a 40-year-old living with Type 1 diabetes for over two decades, and Cédric, a specialist in medico-psychological support. Salvatorangelo volunteers with the French Federation of Diabetics and is currently undergoing training to become a certified “expert patient” volunteer, empowering him to share his lived experience and provide peer support. Cédric focuses on the psychological and relational challenges faced by individuals with diabetes and their loved ones.
Recognizing the difficulties inherent in daily diabetes management, Diab’aide52 implements several key activities. These include interactive meetings and workshops designed to foster knowlege sharing and skill-building, public awareness campaigns highlighting the risks associated with diabetes, and the distribution of informational flyers in primary schools (targeting both children and parents), public spaces, and healthcare facilities. The association also actively collaborates with other organizations and healthcare professionals to maximize its impact.
A unique aspect of Diab’aide52’s approach is its collection of testimonials from patients who have successfully navigated denial – a common hurdle, notably among young adults and the elderly. These stories serve as powerful sources of inspiration and hope. Events also feature healthy refreshments, promoting a holistic approach to well-being.
Expanding Local Impact
Diab’aide52 is intensifying its efforts within the Haute-Marne department.Planned initiatives include preventative education programs in primary schools across the 52 communes, free diabetes screenings in both villages and towns, and facilitated meetings for diabetics and their families to share experiences and build a supportive network. The association will also host information sessions led by healthcare professionals, keeping the community abreast of the latest advancements in diabetes treatments and therapies.
