Dewi Sukarno Indicted: Former First Lady Accused of Assault in Tokyo
Tokyo prosecutors indicted Dewi Sukarno, 86, the widow of former Indonesian President Sukarno and a television personality in Japan, on Monday without arrest on suspicion of assault. The charge stems from an incident last October involving her former manager at a veterinary hospital in Shibuya Ward.
According to prosecutors, Sukarno allegedly punched and kicked her manager, a woman in her 30s, causing minor injuries. The Metropolitan Police Department initially referred the case to prosecutors in January following a voluntary questioning of Sukarno, during which she admitted to being intoxicated at the time of the alleged assault but denied causing any injuries, according to Nippon News Network reports.
The incident unfolded after the manager took Sukarno’s dog to the animal hospital due to illness. The dog died while under veterinary care, and upon arriving at the clinic, Sukarno reportedly became upset with hospital staff. The manager attempted to intervene, leading to the alleged physical altercation, police stated.
Dewi Sukarno, also known as Madame Dewi in Japan, previously led a political organization focused on animal welfare. She was one of Sukarno’s multiple wives during his presidency of Indonesia. The Yomiuri Shimbun reported the referral to prosecutors on January 23, 2026.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the referral to public prosecutors on Friday, January 23, according to reports from The Tokyo Reporter and Japan Today. Further details regarding the next steps in the legal proceedings have not been released.
