Devils Acquire Luke Evangelista from Predators for Two Draft Picks

September 2, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The New Jersey Devils have acquired 24-year-old forward Luke Evangelista from the Nashville Predators in exchange for two draft picks, according to reports confirmed by both clubs on Tuesday. The transaction brings a young, cost-controlled winger to Newark who is coming off a career-best campaign featuring 56 points in 81 games.

Evaluating the Trade Details and Draft Capital

According to Associated Press coverage of the transaction, the Devils sent a conditional first-round pick and a second-round selection in the 2028 NHL Draft to Nashville. The first-round choice originates from the Colorado Avalanche.

For Nashville general manager Chris MacFarland, the move provides distinct financial and roster advantages. Evangelista carries a $3 million salary cap hit and enters the final year of a two-year contract. In a statement released regarding the trade, MacFarland explained the rationale behind parting with a player who established himself as a fan favorite:

This trade … provides us with flexibility from a roster and salary cap standpoint to make additional improvements to our team; and creates a space for the promising young wingers within our organization to compete for, and earn, an NHL job.

Evangelista departs Nashville having accumulated 143 points across 259 regular-season and playoff games since being selected in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft. His offensive output last season included 12 goals and 44 assists.

Roster Overhaul and Front-Office Strategy in New Jersey

The acquisition marks another transaction executed by first-time general manager Sunny Mehta, who has aggressively reshaped the Devils’ forward group during the offseason. Evangelista joins a wave of incoming forwards that includes Anthony Mantha, Evan Rodrigues, Jesper Boqvist, and Amadeus Lombardi.

Nashville, meanwhile, holds enhanced draft capital and financial space to navigate future roster building as the organization evaluates its pipeline of young talent.
