The Detroit Pistons are beginning to assess potential long-term replacements for power forward Tobias Harris, whose current contract is set to expire after the 2024-2025 season, according to multiple sources familiar with the team’s planning. While a reunion with the veteran Harris remains a possibility, the Pistons are evaluating upcoming draft prospects, with Florida forward Thomas Haugh emerging as a player of particular interest.
Harris, currently 33, rejoined the Pistons in February 2024 after previous stints with the team in 2016-2018. He has become a key veteran presence in Detroit, but the team recognizes the necessitate to plan for the future at the power forward position. According to a report from February 6, 2026, the Pistons did not trade Harris at the NBA trade deadline, signaling a willingness to retain him, but also acknowledging the need to explore options for the future.
The Pistons’ draft position, currently 21st overall following a pick swap with the Minnesota Timberwolves stemming from the Jaden Ivey trade, could allow them to select Haugh, who is viewed as a relatively safe prospect with a high motor and the ability to shoot. Scouts describe Haugh as an “all-rounder” who excels as a cutter and runs the floor effectively. He currently averages 17 points per game and shoots 34.8 percent from three-point range on over five attempts per game.
While Haugh is projected by some to be a lottery pick, his age – he will be 23 before the start of next season – and perceived ceiling could allow him to be available at the Pistons’ draft slot. The 2026 draft class is considered particularly deep, potentially leading teams to prioritize younger players with higher upside. Other power forward prospects the Pistons are monitoring include Yaxel Lendeborg, Koa Peat, Jayden Quaintance, and Chris Cenac Jr.
The Pistons’ front office is weighing multiple scenarios, including retaining Harris on a new contract, adding a young player to mentor under him, or pursuing a trade for an established player. The team’s recent trade deadline activity, which focused on adding shooting rather than making a major overhaul, suggests a cautious approach to roster construction.
