Shifting Market Dynamics in North American Robotics

Two decades of order data highlight a fundamental transformation in where and how industrial automation is deployed. While automotive customers ordered 16,368 units in 2025—representing a 6.9% year-over-year increase, led by a 25.2% jump in automotive OEM orders at 10,215 units—non-automotive industries now account for the majority of the market. Non-automotive installations constituted 31.0% of North American units in 2005, but grew to 55.5% by 2025. Food and consumer goods, life sciences, semiconductors, electronics, and metals now represent more than half of total demand, broadening the requirement for standardized safety integration.

This market diversification contrasts sharply with deployment patterns from twenty years ago. When automotive applications comprised nearly 70% of deployments, safety engineering relied on mature, highly concentrated programs with established risk assessment pipelines. Today, the influx of collaborative and mobile robots operating alongside human workers across diverse commercial environments requires updated deployment strategies and broadened technical training.

Vendor Investments and Regional Capacity in Oakland County

To support this growing install base, automation vendors have committed significant capital to Michigan’s manufacturing corridors. FANUC America announced a $90 million investment on March 24, 2026, to construct an 840,000-square-foot facility in Michigan targeted for completion in late 2027, adding 225 jobs. This project brings FANUC America’s total U.S. facility investments to nearly $300 million, expanding its footprint to 3 million square feet and creating more than 700 jobs nationwide since 2019, alongside an expanded FANUC Academy opening in Auburn Hills.

Plans for a United States Operations Hub in Wixom throughout 2026 were revealed by Teradyne Robotics in December 2025 as an addition to this broader growth. The facility will manufacture Universal Robots collaborative robots, with potential integration for MiR autonomous mobile robots, while serving as a regional training, service, and customer experience center. Justin Brown, chief commercial officer of the Teradyne Robotics Group, stated that the location places the company at the center of U.S. manufacturing and innovation less than 30 minutes from downtown Detroit.

Engineering Pipelines and Educational Infrastructure

Supporting these vendor investments is a deep regional talent pool and an expanding engineering infrastructure. In Michigan, the state’s employment figures compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in mid-2026 totaled 109,900 workers in motor vehicle parts manufacturing during May 2026 alongside 46,500 workers in motor vehicle manufacturing during June 2026. The Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns tallied 88,167 manufacturing establishments across the entire eight-state Great Lakes region—which includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—back in 2023.

Academic institutions have scaled their programs to match this industrial demand. The University of Michigan established a dedicated Department of Robotics in December 2021, marking a first among the top 10 engineering schools. The 30-acre Michigan Central district in Corktown houses Newlab, a 270,000-square-foot facility supporting over 100 member companies. Among them is Inbolt, a French developer of AI-based 3D vision for industrial robots, which established operations at the district in 2025 to service the U.S. market.

Preparing for the International Robot Safety Conference 2026

The convergence of rising unit volumes, non-automotive diversification, and collaborative robot integration makes risk mitigation a primary operational priority. The upcoming International Robot Safety Conference, running November 3–5, 2026, at Huntington Place in Detroit, will serve as the primary forum for addressing these engineering and safety challenges.
