Detroit High School Students Can Earn $100 Weekly for Perfect Attendance

Detroit high school students can earn up to $100 per week in digital Visa gift cards for maintaining perfect attendance during the 2026-27 school year, as part of an expanded municipal effort to combat chronic absenteeism.

Expanding Attendance Incentives Across Detroit Public Schools

The Detroit Public Schools Community District is bringing back its ‘Perfect Attendance Pays’ initiative, expanding the program’s scope to reach younger learners alongside high schoolers. According to coverage from Dexerto and Factually, high school students can receive a $100 digital Visa gift card for each qualifying week, while the program now includes middle schoolers in grades six through eight who can earn $50 per week.

District reporting indicates that the incentive is structured to run in weekly cycles between January and March. This specific winter window targets months when student attendance historically dips due to severe weather conditions and seasonal illnesses. To secure the payment, students must attend every class during a designated five-day cycle. While tardiness is permitted, missing even a single class period or recording an unexcused absence results in forfeiting that week’s financial reward.

Municipal records and local reporting show that the initiative relies on direct digital payouts delivered straight to student district email addresses rather than raffles. Furthermore, the district explicitly prohibits converting these digital cards into physical cash through third-party applications.

Measuring the Financial Investment and Early Results

Approximately $13.9 million has been allocated toward attendance incentives and other efforts to reduce absenteeism. These funds support a broader strategy that includes free bus rides, rideshare pilots, and dedicated school health hubs to address external barriers.

Data compiled by Chalkbeat Detroit shows substantial student participation during previous rollouts. Roughly 12,800 out of 15,247 high school students received at least one $100 gift card during the 2025-26 academic year across 26 high schools. District leadership notes that high school chronic absenteeism dropped from 64% in the 2023-24 school year down to 54% by the end of April 2026.

Superintendent Nikolai Vitti noted in public reporting that the payouts largely reached students who already attended regularly or faced a minor risk of chronic absenteeism, rather than engaging those who are severely absent.

Community Debates and Structural Support Systems

The cash-for-attendance model continues to draw a mix of praise and criticism from educational commentators and local observers. Proponents argue that direct incentives provide immediate recognition for students and help families offset everyday expenses. Critics and opinion columnists, however, debate whether short-term financial rewards can drive long-term academic achievement or if funds would be better spent entirely on infrastructure.

As the district prepares for the upcoming cycle, educators and municipal leaders continue to evaluate whether direct incentives can permanently shift attendance trends without compromising core instructional standards.
