Desert Age Documentary Gets 10th Anniversary Re-Release Featuring Black Flag and Kyuss Archival Footage
Desert Age Documentary 10th Anniversary Re-Release Adds 1981 Black Flag Footage
A special premiere screening and Q&A are scheduled for November 7 at Festival Theaters in Palm Springs, California, ahead of the film’s wider online release.
From IndieGogo Roots to a Decade-Old Archive
Director Jason Georgiades originally brought the feature-length project to screens in 2016 following an IndieGogo crowdfunding campaign. Over the intervening decade, the documentary has documented the desert rock scene forged in the California desert. The film features performance footage and interviews with prominent figures from the scene, including Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, Brant Bjork, Nick Oliveri, Jesse Hughes, Mario Lalli, and bands such as Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Fu Manchu, and Eagles of Death Metal. The documentary also includes contributions from additional regional acts, specifically Target 13, Mutual Hatred, Dead Issue, and Across the River.
Uncovering Lost Artifacts of the Desert Rock Scene
In a statement provided to consequence.net, Georgiades recalled that the genesis of the project coincided with the death of his grandmother on the same evening he received a phone call from Gary Arce, the lead guitarist and founding member of Yawning Man. Georgiades described the project as an act of rescue, preserving disintegrating band flyers and dusty photo albums that span roughly from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s. The director assembled what stands as an extensive digital archive of the region’s early musical milestones, capturing the raw and primitive core of a movement. Almost ten years later, I’m humbled to call many of the people I met while making the film my friends,
Georgiades noted. Looking back, I’m reminded that the day I lost one of my best friends was also the day I began making new ones.
Palm Springs Screening Features Post-Film Creator Panel
The upcoming November 7 screening in Palm Springs brings together several musicians and creators central to the documentary’s subject matter. Following the film, writer and anthropologist Natasha Berenek will host a Q&A panel featuring Mario Lalli, Brant Bjork, Sean Wheeler, Sophia Possidon, director Jason Georgiades, and producer Trevar Cushing. Tickets are available for the Festival Theaters event, though specific pricing was not detailed.
Online Release Follows Desert Premiere
For audiences unable to attend the desert premiere, the 10th anniversary special edition becomes available online via Jgeorgiades.com beginning November 20, as reported by consequence.net. Alongside the announcement, the production released an exclusive gallery of archival photographs highlighting Black Flag, a young Josh Homme, and other artists featured in the documentary.
Production Context
The re-release, which was formally announced in November 2026, aims to provide viewers with additional evidence of the local scene through new audio and visual evidence rather than relying solely on later recollections. The archival materials serve as creative testimonials of a movement that Georgiades described as dripping wet and soaked with unbelievable creativity, ferocity, and original vision.
