Derry Murder Probe: Woman Dies, Man Arrested – March 2026
A murder investigation is underway in Derry/Londonderry following the death of a woman on Saturday, March 21, 2026. Police responded to reports of a violent incident at a property in the Summer Meadows Mews area of the city at approximately 10:20 am.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the woman was injured and immediately summoned emergency medical services. Paramedics from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) transported her to Altnagelvin Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, according to reports.
A 30-year-old man has been arrested by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) on suspicion of murder. Detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team are leading the inquiry.
Detective Inspector Michelle Griffin, of the Major Investigation Team, stated, “Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones, who are left trying to come to terms with this shocking loss.”
A forensic examination is currently being conducted at the property in Summer Meadows Mews and a security cordon remains in place. Forensic officers have been seen examining a car that was abandoned on the Foyle Bridge earlier in the day, though that area has since been reopened. Police have indicated that this earlier incident may be linked to the murder investigation.
Local political representatives have expressed shock and sadness at the news. SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan described the incident as “heartbreaking and horrific,” adding that it had “shocked the city” and particularly the local community. Sinn Féin MLA Ciara Ferguson echoed these sentiments, stating that the death had caused “shock and devastation across Derry.”
Detective Inspector Griffin has appealed to the public for information, stating, “Our enquiries are continuing, and I am appealing to anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact our officers on 101 quoting reference 469 – 21/03/26.” She as well reminded the public that information can be provided anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
