Derry Murder: Man Arrested After Amy Doherty Death – Latest Updates
A 30-year-vintage man arrested in connection with the death of Amy Doherty, a 28-year-old mother of two, is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained after a fall from the Foyle Bridge in Derry, and is deemed unfit for police interview, authorities confirmed Wednesday.
Doherty was discovered seriously injured at a property in Summer Meadows Mews on Saturday morning and subsequently died in hospital. Police launched a murder investigation following her death.
The injured man was apprehended later on Saturday, but the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) stated he remains under medical care and is unable to be questioned regarding the incident. The fall from the Foyle Bridge prompted road closures and a subsequent search and rescue operation, according to police reports.
Family members have expressed their devastation. In a statement released through the BBC, Doherty’s parents, Patrick and Sharon, said they were “crushed with disbelief, sadness and pain.” They described their daughter as a loving mother to Rhea and Ronan, and a cherished sister to Shane and Ryan. They also highlighted her dedication to her career in caring for the sick and elderly.
A vigil in memory of Amy Doherty is scheduled to take place at Derry’s Guildhall on Friday evening, and her funeral will be held on Thursday. The service will begin at her family home, followed by a Requiem Mass at Holy Family Church, Ballymagroarty, and cremation at Antrim & Newtownabbey Crematorium.
Doherty’s death marks the 33rd instance of a female murder in Northern Ireland since January 2020, with three of the victims being under the age of 18. According to a death notice, she is remembered as a beloved mother, daughter, sister, and granddaughter.
Detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Doherty’s death and maintain a presence in the Summer Meadows area. Police have appealed to the public for any information that may assist with the investigation.
