Los Angeles Welcomes Oceania Regatta on Historic Pacific Passage
Dr. Dean Allen embarked today on a Pacific cruise aboard the Oceania Regatta, marking a first for the author and speaker – departure from the Port of Los Angeles, the Western Hemisphere’s busiest container port. Allen will serve as the keynote speaker during the voyage.
The Port of Los Angeles, a vital economic engine for Southern California, spans 7,500 acres across San Pedro Bay, 25 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, and boasts 43 miles of waterfront. Annually, the port generates billions in economic activity, supporting commerce, tourism, and countless jobs. This departure highlights the port’s dual role as a global trade hub and a gateway for leisure travel. The cruise’s commencement underscores the ongoing recovery and growth of the tourism sector,a key component of the port’s economic impact.
During the vessel’s outbound journey, passengers passed the USS Iowa (BB-61),a retired battleship now permanently docked as a museum. Commissioned in 1943, the USS Iowa participated in World War II, the Korean War, and served throughout the Cold War, earning 11 battle stars. Notably, the battleship hosted three U.S. Presidents, leading to its nicknames “Battleship of Presidents” and “Big Stick.” The ship was awarded to the Pacific battleship Center on September 6, 2011, for public display at the Port of Los Angeles.
