Denzel Washington Doesn’t Care About Being “Canceled” – Or Public Opinion
Los Angeles, CA – Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington revealed his indifference to teh concept of “cancel culture” and the pursuit of public approval during a recent interview. The discussion arose while promoting his latest film, “The Equalizer 3,” with frequent collaborator Spike Lee.
When asked if he ever worries about being “canceled,” Washington responded with a blunt, “Who cares?” according to a report by Complex News. He challenged the premise of the question, asking,”What made public support so important to begin with?”
The actor further elaborated, stating,”I don’t care who’s following who. You can’t lead and follow simultaneously occurring, and you can’t follow and lead at the same time. I don’t follow anybody. I follow the heavenly spirit. I follow God, I don’t follow man. I have faith in God. I have hope in man, but look around, it ain’t working out so well.”
Washington added a pragmatic perspective, stating, “You can’t be canceled if you haven’t signed up. Don’t sign up.”
Spike lee echoed Washington’s sentiment, simply stating,”I could care less.”
This isn’t the first time Washington has expressed a lack of concern for public opinion. He previously stated he is not concerned with winning Academy Awards, saying, “I don’t do it for the Oscars. I really don’t care about that kind of stuff.” He believes that “God gives the reward,” and that awards are ultimately insignificant.
