Rescued Lion from ukraine Undergoes Emergency Dental Surgery in Kent
KENT, ENGLAND – A lioness rescued from war-torn Ukraine has successfully undergone a complex dental procedure at The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent to remove a severely infected tooth. Lira, one of five lions brought to the sanctuary following a fundraising campaign, was found to have a considerable growth on her jawline during a routine health check.
The discovery prompted immediate action from the sanctuary’s veterinary team, led by curator Briony smith, who resolute the issue was far more serious than initially suspected. The procedure, completed while Lira was safely sedated and monitored, removed a massive infected tooth and eliminated a notable source of potential toxins within her body. The successful surgery marks a critical step in Lira’s ongoing recovery and rehabilitation after a traumatic journey from Ukraine.
Lira arrived at The Big cat Sanctuary after managing director Cam Whitnall spearheaded a £500,000 fundraising effort to evacuate her and four other lions from the conflict zone. She experienced grass for the first time upon arrival in August 2024,a symbolic moment highlighting the sanctuary’s commitment to providing a safe haven for animals displaced by crisis.
“We had noticed a small lump on Lira’s jawline, but it is impractical for us to know the extent of the problem in situations like this,” explained Smith. “I am so glad we booked her in, as it was a much bigger issue than any of us had anticipated.”
Following the surgery, Lira was transported back to her enclosure where the anaesthetic was reversed, allowing her to wake up under close veterinary supervision. While some initial discomfort is expected, veterinarians anticipate a full recovery as the toxins are eliminated from her system. The Big Cat Sanctuary continues to monitor Lira’s progress and provide ongoing care.
