Galician Court Convicts Dental Hygienist of Illegal Practice
Vigo, Spain – A court in Pontevedra, Spain, has upheld a conviction against an individual practicing as a dental hygienist without the required Spanish qualifications, the Professional Association of Dental Hygienists of galicia (Colexio) announced today. The Provincial court on October 23rd confirmed the sentence originally issued by the Criminal Court No. 3 of Vigo.
the defendant, who holds a Dental Surgeon degree from Mexico, was sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay procedural costs after being found guilty of professional intrusion. The court determined that the foreign degree, lacking Spanish homologation, did not authorize her to perform the duties of a Dental Hygienist in galicia.
“Through the aforementioned Sentence, the Court has confirmed the existence of a crime of professional intrusion for which the accused had been convicted,” stated the colexio, which brought the complaint. Thay emphasized, “the pending approval does not confer authorization to carry out the functions reserved for the profession of Dental Hygienist.”
The Colexio further asserted, “The fact of having a foreign qualification without homologation is equivalent to not having any qualification at all.”
This case highlights a growing issue in Spain: qualified immigrants facing lengthy bureaucratic delays in having their credentials recognized. While the integration of foreign-trained healthcare professionals could help address shortages in the Spanish medical system, the slow processing of applications is reportedly fueling the rise of document forgery rings.
