Buenos Aires Launches Expanded Dengue Vaccination Campaign
Buenos Aires City officials have broadened the scope of its dengue vaccination campaign, now offering the shot to residents aged 15 to 59. The initiative, which builds on a program that began last year and has already immunized over 50,000 people, aims to curb the spread of the mosquito-borne virus as cases rise. Vaccination is free and available by appointment at nine city locations.
The vaccine,Qdenga, developed by Takeda and approved by ANMAT in 2023,is administered in two doses,90 days apart. Residents can schedule appointments through the city’s health website: https://buenosaires.gob.ar/salud/plan-dengue-y-otras-enfermedades-transmitidas-por-mosquitos-aedes-aegypti/vacunacion-contra.
Vaccination centers are located at: the Rivadavia Hospital (Arenales 2733), CESAC N°11 (Agüero 940), N°1 (Vélez Sársfield 1271 Avenue), N°3 (Soldier of the Border 5144), N°37 (Avenida de los Corrales 6999), Hospital Durand (Díaz Vélez 5044), Hospital Pirovano (Monroe 3555), Corralón Floresta (Gaona 4660), and the Islamic Center (Mayor Bullrich 55).
While the Ministry of Health calls vaccination a “key tool” to slow transmission, officials emphasize it does not prevent outbreaks. Therefore, continued efforts to eliminate breeding grounds – including the use of oviposition sensors to detect larvae – remain crucial. “It is indeed essential [to monitor] oviposition sensors to 260 and the elimination of hatcheries in the areas where the sensors give positive,” the Ministry stated.
