Dengue Case Reported in French Polynesia: Prevention Measures Activated

March 23, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

A case of imported dengue fever has been diagnosed at Sia Hospital on March 20, according to a press release from the local health agency. The patient had recently arrived in French Polynesia.

Following the diagnosis, the health agency immediately implemented a series of measures to prevent the spread of the disease. The patient has been placed in isolation for one week. Larval habitats are being eliminated around the patient’s residence, accompanied by insecticide spraying within a 150-meter radius. Epidemiological surveillance has also been strengthened.

The agency is advising the public to take preventative measures against mosquitoes, including the use of repellents, the destruction of breeding sites, and prompt medical consultation if symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, joint pain, body aches, or skin rash appear.

This case occurs as France, including its overseas territories, has seen a significant increase in both imported and locally acquired cases of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika in recent years. In 2024, metropolitan France recorded a record number of dengue cases, according to the Ministry of Health. Since the beginning of 2025, Santé publique France has already recorded over 1100 imported cases of dengue and more than 900 imported cases of chikungunya.

The dengue virus, along with chikungunya and Zika, are typically found in tropical and subtropical regions, but the Aedes albopictus mosquito – a potential vector for these arboviruses – is present in mainland France. This creates a risk of local transmission when a traveler returns with the virus, according to the regional health agency of Pays de la Loire.

Health officials emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and reporting of these diseases by healthcare professionals to reduce the risk of local transmission chains. Santé publique France has made available a guide for healthcare professionals outlining prevention measures and key messages to share with patients affected by dengue, chikungunya, or Zika.

The health agency is closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as necessary.
