Democratic Doctors Caucus Denounces Trump & KennedyS unfounded Claims Linking Acetaminophen to Autism
WASHINGTON D.C. – Members of the Democratic Doctors Caucus sharply criticized a recent press conference led by former President Donald Trump and HHS Secretary Xavier Kennedy, where unsubstantiated claims were made linking acetaminophen – the primary ingredient in Tylenol – to increased rates of autism. The Caucus, comprised of representatives Ami Bera (CA-06), Herbert conaway (NJ-03), maxine Dexter (OR-03), Kelly Morrison (MN-03), raul Ruiz (CA-25), and Kim Schrier (WA-08), released a statement denouncing the assertions as both “incoherent and dangerous.”
The physicians emphasized the well-established safety and efficacy of acetaminophen, a widely used over-the-counter medication for pain and fever reduction. They specifically highlighted its recognized safety for use during pregnancy, stating that denying expectant mothers access to this medication – as suggested by Trump’s call to “tough it out” – could jeopardize both maternal and fetal health. Untreated fevers, infections, and pain during pregnancy can pose significant risks to developing fetuses.
“To suggest a causal link between acetaminophen and autism without any credible scientific backing is deeply irresponsible,” the statement read. “It needlessly instills fear, confusion, and guilt in patients and their families.”
The Caucus expressed deep concern over what they characterized as a growing trend of medical misinformation emanating from the White House. They urged Americans to rely on the guidance of their personal healthcare providers for medical advice, reinforcing the principle that healthcare decisions should be grounded in scientific evidence, not political rhetoric.
