Vorarlberg Faces Looming Dementia Crisis: Cases Expected to Double

Lustenau, Vorarlberg – As World Alzheimer’s Day approaches this Sunday, “Action Dementia” is spotlighting the growing challenge of dementia in Vorarlberg, where 7,600 people are currently diagnosed with the condition. However, officials believe the actual number of unreported cases is significantly higher, and a projected increase in the over-65 population signals a potential doubling of dementia patients in the coming years and decades.

Health Councilor martina RĂĽscher (Ă–VP) emphasized the demographic trend, stating, “We see from the numbers that the population over 65 will increase significantly in the coming years and decades.” This anticipated growth underscores the urgent need for increased awareness, support services, and preventative measures within the region.

For nearly two decades, “Action Dementia” has worked to address the issue, establishing ten dementia cafes across Vorarlberg – including the first, opened four years ago in Lustenau – to combat social isolation. “Those affected can meet there in a protected framework,” explains Daniela Egger, head of “Action Dementia.” “They have a really positive effect on those affected and the relatives. It is simply the best antidote against loneliness.” Additional cafes are planned for autumn and spring, focusing on social interaction and shared meals.

Beyond support for those currently living with dementia, “Action Dementia” is also investing in education. the institution conducts approximately 100 workshops annually in elementary schools, aiming to normalize the topic and dispel misconceptions. Egger notes that manny children already have personal connections to the disease, with at least one in three knowing someone affected.”They then come out of these training courses and know that it is not contagious, is not so threatening and also know how they can handle it,” she said.

A series of events are planned around World Alzheimer’s Day,including readings, films, and theatrical performances. “Action dementia” is also developing an original play with the participation of individuals living with dementia, slated for production in 2026.
