Yamuna River Levels Rise, Delhi on Alert for Potential Flooding
New Delhi – authorities in Delhi are closely monitoring the Yamuna River as water levels continue to rise following heavy rainfall upstream. As of Thursday, the river stood at 205.25 meters and is forecast to reach 205.33 meters – the “danger level” – by 10:00 AM Friday. Preparations are underway to possibly evacuate residents from low-lying areas if the water approaches or reaches 206 meters, with traffic likely to be halted on the Old Railway bridge at that point.
Context & Background:
The Yamuna River frequently experiences seasonal increases in water levels, particularly during the monsoon season. This year, however, officials believe a repeat of the severe flooding seen in 2023 is unlikely due to proactive measures. A key difference this year is that all gates at the ITO barrage are currently open, ensuring uninterrupted water flow and preventing a build-up of pressure.
