Deep-Sea Creatures: Amazing Animals That Live in the Deepest Ocean

March 20, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) have been documenting unusual marine life at extreme ocean depths, some of which bear a striking resemblance to creatures from science fiction, according to a report released Friday.

The institute has spent years exploring the deep sea, recording observations of animals living in conditions previously thought uninhabitable for complex life. One such creature, Bathydevius caudactylus, is a species of nudibranch, or sea slug, that dwells between 1,000 and 4,000 meters below the surface – a significant departure from other sea slugs that typically inhabit shallower waters.

Another remarkable find is the “flapjack octopus,” named for its pancake-like appearance. When threatened, this octopus employs a unique defense mechanism, erecting its body and propelling itself through the water by flapping its short fins, moving its webbed arms, and expelling water through a siphon.

MBARI’s research also highlights the Atolla sp., a deep-sea crown jellyfish, frequently encountered in these dark environments. This jellyfish is characterized by its long tentacles and a red body, which serves as camouflage in the absence of sunlight.

Scientists note that the deep ocean, often referred to as a “third world” after land and air, presents a unique environment where evolutionary pressures can lead to the development of astonishing life forms. Many of these creatures remain largely unknown to the public, according to a report from IDN Times.

Among the other unusual species identified are the vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis), which lives between 600 and 1,200 meters deep and feeds on “marine snow”—organic particles drifting down from above—and exhibits bioluminescence, emitting a blue-red glow. The mimic octopus, found in Sulawesi, Indonesia, demonstrates an ability to imitate other animals to evade predators, showcasing the region’s rich biodiversity. The armored searobin is another deep-sea fish capable of “walking” along the ocean floor using its thickened fins.

The extreme conditions of the deep sea, including low oxygen levels, contribute to the evolution of these unique adaptations. The pelican eel (Eurypharynx pelecanoides), for example, possesses an enormous mouth used to engulf prey, and resides in the mesopelagic zone, at depths of around 2,700 meters. The fangtooth fish, with its disproportionately large teeth, is another example of a creature adapted to the harsh conditions of the deep ocean.
