Deen Castronovo hospitalized after Journey concert stops in Tulsa
Concert Interruption and On-Stage Updates
The Tulsa concert stopped abruptly after the band completed its second number, and the musician was reportedly helped off the stage before being hospitalized. As the rest of the members left the stage, keyboardist Jonathan Cain addressed the audience directly about the developing situation. According to Tulsa World, Cain asked the crowd for patience and support. We’re gong to see what happens as this progresses,
Cain told the audience in a video captured by local sports reporter Eric Bailey. It’s an unfortunate situation. We’re very sorry. We’re hoping it’s only a delay, but please — I’m sorry. Don’t worry. Have your prayers ready. Have your prayers ready for Deen Castronovo, everybody. Thank you.
Ten minutes after the initial stoppage, founder and guitarist Neal Schon returned to the stage to confirm that Castronovo had been taken to a hospital, telling the crowd to Give a big hand for Steve Toomey,
and adding, We love you all. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience.
Rather than canceling the remainder of the evening, Schon announced that the show would continue with Castronovo’s drum tech, Steve Toomey, filling in for him for the rest of the show after a 15-minute break.
Resuming the Set With a Replacement Drummer
Schon said of Toomey, He’s very good.
Current lead vocalist Arnel Pineda repeated requests for the audience to keep Castronovo in their prayers as the set resumed. After performing the song “Lights,” Schon dedicated the rest of the performance to the hospitalized drummer, telling the crowd, This concert is for Deen,
and adding, I’d love you all to pray for him.
Everybody’s been going through a lot.
Schon further told the audience, I think he’s going to be fine.
Journey Performs Final Frontier Farewell Tour
The incident occurred while Journey was on the road for the Final Frontier farewell tour. The tour launched in Hershey, Pennsylvania, on February 28, subsequently adding 40 North American dates, with a fall leg kicking off on September 12 in Los Angeles ahead of a scheduled conclusion on November 28 in San Francisco. Schon stated in a previous statement, The energy has been incredible every night. Seeing these crowds sing these songs with us after all these years has been powerful. We’re excited to bring The Final Frontier Tour to even more cities this fall.
The band previously faced unexpected disruption last year when an electrical fire forced the cancellation of a scheduled concert.
