Ashburn, Virginia – An awkward on-air moment unfolded Saturday during a live interview with San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel on NFL Network, revealing a finger injury Samuel apparently preferred to keep private.

The incident occurred at the Washington Commanders’ training camp facility in Ashburn, Virginia, following Samuel’s practice session. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo attempted to shake Samuel’s hand as the interview concluded, but Samuel declined, stating he had “jammed” his finger earlier in the day. Garafolo, seemingly caught off guard, immediately attempted to retract his statement, saying, “Was I not supposed to say that? Alright, edit that part out.Strike that. That didn’t happen. I’ll give him a left-handed fist bump?”

Samuel visibly reacted with discomfort to Garafolo’s disclosure,as captured in a clip circulating on social media. The Commanders acquired Samuel from the 49ers on April 26,2024,in a trade that sent a 2025 first-round pick to San Francisco.

The Commanders, who reached the NFC Championship game last season with a 14-4 regular season record, are counting on Samuel to be a key contributor to their offense. He is expected to form a dynamic receiving duo with Terry McLaurin, the team’s established top wideout.

Samuel, a two-time Pro bowler (2022, 2023), is entering his sixth NFL season. The extent of the finger injury is currently unknown, but the Commanders will undoubtedly monitor his condition
