Deadly Storms Batter Germany as Wildfires Rage Across Balkans

August 21, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Severe overnight storms battered Germany, leaving one woman dead, multiple people injured, and widespread infrastructure damage in their wake, while southeastern European nations contended with persistent, severe wildfires amid a brutal summer heat wave, according to reports from the German news agency dpa and international coverage from Yahoo News and CTV News.

Fatal Storms and Structural Devastation Across German Regions

In Waldorf, located in the southwestern state of Rhineland-Palatinate, a 58-year-old woman was fatally struck by an uprooted tree while seeking shelter under a covered seating area during the onset of the storm, local police reported. A 47-year-old woman walking with her sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital. Further north, a tornado struck the town of Fürstenwalde approximately 78 kilometers southeast of Berlin, tearing roofs off buildings and damaging several vehicles with falling debris, injuring one person. In Höhr-Grenzhausen within the Westerwald district, storms stripped walls from at least two homes, downed building facades, uprooted trees, triggered widespread power outages, and overturned a truck on the A61 highway.

Emergency services logged numerous weather-related calls overnight across Hesse, Thuringia, and Bavaria. In Kronach, Bavaria, authorities partially evacuated an outdoor village festival late Wednesday evening, forcing roughly 3,500 guests to relocate into local beer halls. Meanwhile, in Wetzlar, Hesse, the fire department reported that approximately 60 houses suffered damage, with roofing materials blown up to 100 meters away. The German Weather Service warned that additional severe storms could impact southern regions, specifically Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, later in the day.

Balkan Wildfires and Regional Heat Waves

While cooler temperatures accompanied the stormy weather in Germany, extreme heat persisted across southeastern Europe, fueling ongoing wildfires. In Serbia, a Russian-supplied Il-76 firefighting plane arrived on Wednesday evening to assist local crews battling a stubborn blaze in the Deliblatska Pescara, or Deliblato Sands, nature reserve in the country’s northeast. The fire initially ignited a month ago, remained contained until early August, and subsequently expanded rapidly across thousands of acres of pine forests and shrubbery. The deployment highlighted ongoing diplomatic ties between Belgrade and Moscow despite Serbia’s stated objective of joining the European Union.

Additional major fires continued to burn across Serbia and the broader region throughout the summer, driven by high temperatures and dry conditions spanning from Belgium to Greece. Near the Adriatic coast, Croatian firefighters from the tourist hub of Dubrovnik crossed the border on Thursday to help contain a massive fire in inaccessible terrain in Bosnia, working to prevent the flames from spreading toward the medieval walled city recognized as a UNESCO protected heritage site. Regional firefighting unit commander Stjepan Simović described the overnight conditions to the Hina news agency as difficult and demanding constant vigilance.
