Dead Space Creator Glen Schofield Retires From Game Industry

July 15, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Glen Schofield, the veteran game designer best known for co-creating the Dead Space franchise, has announced his retirement from the video game industry. Schofield confirmed his departure via a post on social media, marking the end of a career in interactive entertainment that spanned more than three decades.

Career Background and Industry Impact

Schofield’s career began in the early 1990s, but he gained widespread recognition during his tenure at Visceral Games, then a subsidiary of Electronic Arts. There, he served as the executive producer and co-creator of the 2008 science-fiction horror title Dead Space. The game was noted for its integration of dismemberment-based combat mechanics and atmospheric sound design, establishing a benchmark for the survival-horror genre.

Following his time at EA, Schofield co-founded Sledgehammer Games, where he played a central role in the development of the Call of Duty franchise. Under his leadership, the studio contributed to titles including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Advanced Warfare, and WWII.

Departure from Striking Distance Studios

Schofield’s most recent professional venture was the founding of Striking Distance Studios in 2019, backed by PUBG Corporation and Krafton. The studio’s primary project was The Callisto Protocol, a survival-horror game released in December 2022.

The title was positioned as a spiritual successor to Dead Space, featuring a high-budget production approach. However, the game received mixed critical reception at launch, with reviewers citing technical performance issues and gameplay repetition. In September 2023, Krafton confirmed that Schofield had stepped down from his role as CEO of Striking Distance Studios. A spokesperson for the company stated at the time that Schofield was leaving to "pursue new opportunities."

Professional Transition

In his retirement announcement, Schofield did not detail specific future projects, nor did he indicate a return to software development. He characterized the decision as a shift away from the industry that has occupied his professional life since the early 1990s.

The transition leaves Striking Distance Studios under new leadership, with the company continuing to operate within the Krafton portfolio. No further statements regarding the studio’s internal restructuring or upcoming development roadmap have been issued by the parent organization.
