DC Lanterns: New Trailer and Story Details Revealed
DC Studios and HBO are launching the official full trailer for their upcoming series Lanterns online simultaneously with a dedicated panel at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H, scheduled from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. tomorrow. Ahead of the panel release, a short teaser trailer debuted online, setting the stage for the August 16 series premiere on HBO.
Deconstructing the 2016 and 2026 Timeline Split
According to new story details reported by Entertainment Weekly, the series unfolds across two distinct points in time: 2016 and 2026. Nearly all footage shown in promotional material thus far centers on the 2016 segments. These scenes trace the dynamic between veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, and newly minted recruit John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, exactly two months into Stewart’s training regimen.
Conversely, the 2026 scenes revolve around undisclosed events that the creative team is holding back for later narrative reveals.
Character Backstories and the Sinestro Shadow
Nathan Fillion joins the cast as Guy Gardner, establishing specific civilian and military backstories for the three primary Green Lantern characters in the DC Studios lineup. As detailed in the production notes, Chandler’s Hal Jordan is a former test pilot, Fillion’s Gardner is introduced as a former gym teacher, and Pierre’s Stewart comes from a military family.
Sinestro has been expelled from the Green Lantern Corps following an attempted coup. This betrayal casts a long shadow over the narrative, as the immortal Guardians of the Universe grow deeply concerned about what Hal Jordan may or may not have inherited from his former mentor and close confidant.
Kyle Chandler described the personal and intense nature of that foundational relationship to Entertainment Weekly, stating:
It was really interesting, because you’re getting into all kinds of different weeds of what goes on in their relationship in the past, a lot of which, for myself, is very personal. I created little things for myself with him that created a relationship that was very intimate and intense.
The Creative Engine Behind the HBO Adaptation
The ensemble cast supporting Chandler, Pierre, and Fillion includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones. Behind the camera, the pilot is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who also share co-creator credits for the entire series. Chris Mundy serves as showrunner, overseeing the day-to-day logistical and creative operations.
