HBO Max Developing Mockumentary Series Centered Around DC Villain Grodd
A mockumentary series focusing on the DC Comics villain Gorilla Grodd is in development at HBO Max, from the creators of the acclaimed Netflix series “American Vandal.” Daniel Yacenda and Dan Perrault will write and executive produce the project, which will offer a comedic take on the supervillain’s world.
The series marks a new direction for DC’s television slate as James Gunn and Peter Safran build an interconnected universe across film and television. Gunn and Safran will also executive produce, wiht DC Studios’ Galen Vaisman overseeing production. Warner Bros. Television is the studio. HBO Max and DC Studios declined to comment.
Yacenda and Perrault are known for their mockumentary style, having previously created ”American Vandal,” a critically-acclaimed series that satirized the true crime genre. The show won a Peabody Award and received an Emmy nomination for best writing in a comedy series. The duo also created the Paramount+ mockumentary “Players,” set in the world of eSports, and previously produced comedic sports parodies for CollegeHumor. Yacenda’s credits include “Chad powers” at Hulu and “Dave” at FX,while Perrault recently appeared in the Netflix series “The residence.”
Grodd, a highly-intelligent gorilla with psychic powers gained from an alien spaceship, first appeared in DC comics in 1959. He has been featured in numerous DC animated series and films, and made appearances in The CW’s “Arrow-verse” shows, notably “The Flash.”
This series joins other upcoming DC television projects at HBO,including the drama “Lanterns” starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, expected to premiere in early 2026,and a “V for Vendetta” series currently in development.
