Stock Analyst David Webb Honored Amidst Health Battle
Independent stock analyst David Webb, known for his sharp insights, is celebrating a prestigious British Empire Medal despite battling prostate cancer. This recognition highlights his significant contributions to corporate governance in Hong Kong, even as he prepares for a challenging final chapter.
A Well-Deserved Honor
In June 2020, David Webb received a prostate cancer diagnosis, prompting him to reflect on life. He recently revealed his wish to celebrate his 60th birthday in August. Adding to the good news, Webb will be awarded the Medal of the British Empire (MBE) for his positive impact on corporate and economic governance, particularly in Hong Kong.
The United Kingdom announced the awards list coinciding with King Charles III’s birthday. Webb expressed his gratitude, noting the British government’s attention to Hong Kong affairs and acknowledging his work over 27 years. He also indicated he is stepping back from public view to focus on his health and expressed gratitude for the support he has received.
I am happy that the UK government highly concerns about HK affairs, and recognises my efforts over the past 27 years.
In the past few months I’ve been gradually fading out of public eye and preparing for the last fight in my life, and I was deeply moved by the respect many gave me. pic.twitter.com/hO7T5M3h8R

Webb’s focus on corporate governance is more relevant than ever, considering that in 2023, there was a 15% increase in shareholder activism, which focuses on improving company practices (Corporate Governance Insights).
A Legacy of Transparency
David Webb earned the moniker “the stock market detective”. His 2017 “Mystery Network” report, which pinpointed 50 companies with complex relationships and concentrated equity, is one of the most recognizable examples of his work. This report issued a warning to smaller shareholders regarding risky investments, underscoring the significance of his investigations.
Webb’s public appearances have decreased recently; his last was at a lunch at a foreign press conference in Hong Kong on May 12. At this event, he shared his insights from over two decades and gave a final tribute to Hong Kong’s “Lion Rock Spirit.” In a recent interview with the BBC, he expressed his belief that Hong Kong will endure, emphasizing its unique identity.
