David Harbour Weighs Legal Options Following Lily Allen‘s Allegations of Infidelity
Los Angeles, CA – David Harbour is reportedly considering a defamation suit against his ex-wife, singer Lily Allen, following the release of her new album which contains lyrics alluding to his alleged infidelity. The album, widely interpreted as a “revenge” record detailing the breakdown of their marriage, has sparked speculation about potential legal action from Harbour.
The controversy stems from lyrics within Allen’s new music that suggest Harbour was unfaithful during their relationship. While the songs do not explicitly name Harbour, the details have led many to believe the accusations are directed at him. This has prompted legal experts to weigh in on whether Allen’s statements could constitute defamation.
According to Louise Lambert, co-CEO of media law firm Reviewed and Cleared, while calling someone a cheater is defamatory, “the truth is a complete defense to defamation.” Lambert explained to Cosmopolitan that Allen would need to provide evidence of cheating should Harbour pursue a claim. Furthermore, any potential lawsuit would necessitate a deep dive into the lyrical interpretations, given the artistic license inherent in songwriting.
Lambert also noted the increased leeway afforded to artistic expression, stating, “The same [defamation] laws govern both [music and journalists] but, as an artistic work, there is perhaps more leeway in terms of what a song actually means.” Allen herself has suggested the album isn’t entirely factual, a point underscored by a recent case where Drake’s defamation lawsuit against Global Music Group regarding Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics was dismissed; the judge ruled Lamar’s statements were “nonactionable opinion.”
Harbour and Allen married in September 2020 and filed for divorce in May 2023, which was finalized later that year. It remains unclear whether Harbour will publicly address the allegations or pursue legal action, particularly as he prepares to begin press engagements for the upcoming season of Stranger Things.
