Dave Marsh, Influential Bruce Springsteen Biographer and Music Critic, Dies at 76

August 18, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Dave Marsh, a music critic, social activist, and the author of the 1979 Bruce Springsteen biography Born to Run, died on Friday, August 14, at the age of 76 in Connecticut. According to his friend Jeffrey St. Clair, co-editor of the online magazine Counterpunch, Marsh had suffered from a degenerative brain disease for several years. SiriusXM radio host Jim Rotolo announced the death on social media.

A Detroit-Grounded Rock ‘n’ Roll Lifer

Born in Pontiac, Michigan, in 1950, Marsh grew up immersed in the sounds of Detroit, absorbing Motown, rhythm and blues, and rock ‘n’ roll. In 1969, he dropped out of Wayne State University to write for the newly launched Creem magazine, where Lester Bangs was among his friends and mentors.

Marsh wrote extensively for Rolling Stone, penning Springsteen’s first cover story in 1978. Beyond his journalism, he authored more than two dozen books, exploring artists from Elvis Presley and The Who to the garage-rock hitmakers behind “Louie Louie.” In 1993, he shared a Grammy for best album notes for Aretha Franklin’s Queen of Soul.

Championing Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Sound

Marsh’s professional and personal life became deeply intertwined with Bruce Springsteen’s ascent to stardom. Legend credits Marsh with introducing Springsteen’s manager and record producer, Jon Landau, to his first live show. In 1979, Marsh released Born to Run: The Bruce Springsteen Story, which became a New York Times bestseller. He followed it up in 1986 with Glory Days: Bruce Springsteen in the 1980s.

That personal bond deepened when Marsh married Barbara Carr in 1979. Carr later became Springsteen’s co-manager alongside Landau, a role she held for decades. Springsteen attended their wedding, and the rocker maintained a lifelong friendship with Marsh.

Following news of his death, Springsteen paid tribute on Instagram, writing that the loss left the band heartbroken. According to Springsteen’s public statement, Marsh was a true rock ‘n’ roll lifer who was soulful, intelligent, heartfelt, opinionated, bruising, and often fantastically argumentative. Springsteen noted that Marsh “deeply believed in what I was trying to accomplish and his lifetime of support meant the world to me.”

Guitarist Steven Van Zandt also shared a remembrance on Instagram, describing Marsh as “fearless, relentless, arrogant, everything you’d want in a RocknRoll troublemaker. And by the way, a tremendous writer.”

Activism, Radio, and the Kristen Ann Carr Fund

Marsh’s influence extended far beyond the printed page. He was a passionate activist for health care, social justice, and freedom of expression. Alongside his music writing, he co-founded the newsletter Rap & Rock Confidential and spent 19 years hosting the show Kick Out the Jams on SiriusXM, alongside appearances on the E Street Nation channel.

In 1993, Marsh and Barbara Carr faced personal tragedy when their 21-year-old daughter, Kristen Ann Carr, died from sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. In response, the couple co-founded The Kristen Ann Carr Fund to advance sarcoma research and support families affected by cancer. Later that year, Springsteen hosted a benefit concert at Madison Square Garden that raised $1.5 million for the charity.

Tom Morello, co-founder of Rage Against the Machine, praised Marsh’s lifelong dedication in 2023, writing that Marsh had always been a “tireless advocate of justice, human rights and rock ’n’ roll.” Former senior director of NPR Music Lauren Onkey added that Marsh wrote about music “like our lives depended on it.”

Marsh is survived by his wife, Barbara Carr, and an enduring legacy that shaped how generations listen to, write about, and understand American popular music.
