In 19th-century Europe, a religious organization known as the Black Order has emerged as the primary defense against the Millennium Earl and his army of Akuma, monstrous beings created by fusing the souls of the deceased with mechanical bodies. The conflict stems from a history dating back 7,000 years, when the Earl first clashed with the “Heart of Pure Power” and was defeated, according to records discovered within an artifact called the “Cube.”
The Cube, unearthed several centuries before the current conflict, detailed the ancient war and predicted the Earl’s return. In anticipation, a group called the New World Alliance founded the Black Order, tasking it with locating and restoring fragments of the Pure Power and identifying individuals capable of wielding it. The Black Order operates as a branch of the Catholic Church, answering to the Vatican.
Central to the Black Order’s efforts are Exorcists, individuals who possess the ability to control “Pure Power.” One such Exorcist is Allen Walker, who, in addition to wielding Pure Power, possesses the unique ability to perceive the souls trapped within the Akuma. Walker joined the Order as a member, and is currently undergoing training.
The Millennium Earl’s strategy involves creating Akuma to rebuild his forces. The process involves capturing the souls of the deceased and binding them to mechanically constructed bodies. The Black Order’s Exorcists are the only known force capable of countering this threat.
Recent developments within the Black Order include the arrival of Cross Marian, who joined the Scientific Department approximately 36 years ago. Around the same time, a betrayal by the Fourteenth Noah, Nea, resulted in the deaths of all Noahs except the Earl and Road. More recently, Komui Lee assumed leadership of the Scientific Department seven years ago, while Allen Walker began performing as a clown, mirroring the actions of his adoptive father, Mana, prior to Mana’s death and subsequent transformation into an Akuma.
The Black Order’s recruitment practices have also drawn attention, with individuals like Lenalee Lee forcibly brought into the organization at age six, and Kanda Yu entering the Order at age nine, becoming a student of Marshal Tidoll. The organization continues to seek out and train potential Exorcists to bolster its ranks against the growing Akuma threat.
The Vatican has issued a confidential directive to Cross, the nature of which remains undisclosed. The Black Order has not released any statements regarding the directive or its potential impact on the ongoing conflict with the Millennium Earl.
